- Mandi's
Story - Mandi was born with in 1987 with ABS affecting
her hands. She is missing her 4th and 5th finger on the right hand and
on the left, her thumb and pointer are stunted. Now at the age of 15 she
has learned how to use her hands like anyone else. She is an avid basketball
player, cheerleader, dancer and softball player.
- Janice's
Story - born with ABS - bands were wrapped around
her neck which caused cleft lip and palate, and deformities of her nose,
she was also born with no eyes. Her soft spot on her head started from
between the eyes and stopped at the lower back of her head. Part of her
brain was in the nasal area, and she even had a second set of very small
sinus cavities, that were connected by a weaving pattern of tubes that
ended as pin point sized holes, just above her top lip. Some bands almost
cut off the circulation in several fingers and around her ankle, causing
unusual growth. One band totally cut off her big toe. Two fingers were
fused together. Both hips were dislocated, and one leg did not have
a regular hip socket. Janice was adopted by a loving couple.
- Matthew's
Story - ABS affected the right hand side of Matthew's
face. He is blind in his right eye.
- Quentin's
Story born with amniotic banding affecting his
right hand and right foot below the ankle.
- Riley
Ann's Story born with an Incomplete
Unilateral Cleft Lip and Complete Cleft Palate and Alveola Ridge (gum
line), and Amniotic Band Syndrome affecting all fingers and thumb on her
right hand, her index and middle fingers on her left hand and her middle
and fourth toes on her left foot.
- Joe's
Story In addition to banding on his left
wrist, he had three raspberry-type hemangioma on his back, a subcutaneous
hemangioma on his spine, a bilateral cleft lip and palate, one missing
toe, two syndactyly toes and one toe bud.
- Maya Imani was born in 1997 with Amniotic Band Syndrome. She was born with a partial left hand and no left arm. Prior to Maya, I had never heard of ABS. I now realize that it is more common than we know. Despite all odds, Maya is an example that one can do anything no matter the circumstances. Maya is a joy to those who comes into contact with her and her radiance has changed lives. Maya taught herself to tie her shoelaces at age 3 years old with one hand. Maya has had 3 prosthesis but they tend to slow her down. Read more of Maya's story from her heart at her web page.
