Amniotic Band Syndrome - ABS

Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS) also called Amniotic Constriction Band Syndrome is a set of congenital birth defects believed to be caused by entrapment of fetal parts (usually a limb or digits) in fibrous amniotic bands while in utero.

In other words:  Before the baby was born the body parts that shows signs of ABS (arm, fingers, toes, etc.,) were caught up and entangled in string-like bands.  This caused abnormalities that were present at birth

My son, Evan, was born with ABS affecting his left hand and with bi-lateral clubfeet. In 1993 when Evan was born we had never heard of Amniotic Constriction Band Syndrome.  The Internet was just a baby at that time too and I didn't know where to find the information I needed.  I've learned a lot about ABS over the years so I developed this Web site to share this with others.  Please keep in mind that I have no medical training and that the information provided here has been gleened from various sources.  Please, feel free to send me your story to add to the site ~ it's these personal stories that make this site special.

When I heard about children born in developing countries with ABS I realized just how fortunate we all are with our access to medical treatment and knowledge.  Please consider sponsoring a child through the Christian Blind Mission's Forgotten Children Program.
